2010 Top Non-Anime Cosplay

Filed under: Cosplay Costumes — Tags: — admin @ 2:24 am

Last year in the United States was easily dubbed the year of Watchmen cosplay costumes. They were everywhere. It started in the spring, before the movie had even come out. And it culminated in the summer and fall, with large cons. I even saw a few Comedians, and an Ozymandias or two. Yes, 2009 was the year for Watchmen cosplay. But what will be the top non-anime cosplay costume inspiration for 2010?

One of the first movies that comes to mind is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which is slated for a late fall 2010 release. Harry Potter cosplay might have peaked a few years ago, but it could easily come back for a huge resurgence. Why? Because people not only create cheap cosplay costumes for conventions, but for big movie releases as well. If a cosplayer can do multiple events in a costume, they may be more likely to make one in the first place. There’s also that whole out of sight, out of mind thing. Harry Potter is about to go out with a bang, in movie franchise terms, and that puts the fandom back in the minds of cosplayers. I think we can expect Harry Potter cosplay to come back, for sure. But will it dominate for the whole year? Given the late fall release date, maybe not.

harry-potter

harry-potter

Another good contender will no doubt be Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Not only has almost every single Tim Burton movie inspired a legion of cosplayers, but Johnny Depp is a cheap cosplay magnet in his own right. Just think back to the insane number of Willy Wonkas and Jack Sparrows from years past. I’ve actually already seen a Johnny Depp Mad Hatter cosplay, and it won’t be the last. The reason? Tim has a tendency to have incredibly unique and memorable costumes in his movies. You see it once, and you remember it. It gives those who create cosplays based on his films a level of instant recognition at conventions that can be very appealing to some. Additionally, the movie has so many iconic characters that it will work well for those who cosplay in groups. I think we can expect a lot of Mad Hatters, Queens of Hearts, Alices, White Rabbits, and Cheshire Cats.

This is my opinion, so how about yours? Please tell me.

Cosplay Is A Subculture

Filed under: Anime Cosplay Costumes — Tags: — admin @ 2:20 am

The appearance of cosplayers at manga events makes such events a popular draw for photographers. As this became apparent in the late 1980s a new variant of cosplay developed in which cosplayers attended events mainly for the purpose of modeling their characters for still photography rather than engaging in continuous role play. Rules of etiquette were developed to minimize awkward situations involving boundaries. Cosplayers pose for photographers in designated areas removed from the exhibit hall. Photographers do not press them for personal contact information or private sessions, follow them out of the area or take photos of exhibits in the hall itself without permission. The rules allow the symbiotic relationship between photographers and cosplayers to continue with the least inconvenience to each.

Recent cosplay events in Asia show an increase in the popularity of non-Asian fantasy and science fiction characters. This reflects the international success of films such as The Dark Knight, The Matrix, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and their associated books. The Harry Potter characters created by J. K. Rowling are popular with female cosplayers in Japan.

cosplay-costumes-subculture

cosplay-costumes-subculture

Cosplay is a youth subculture. The main feature of cosplay is that participants enjoy dressing up as their favorite characters from anime, comic books, and video games. It has developed to include, particularly when adopted in the west, people dressing up as characters from popular non-Asian fantasy and science fiction movies and games, such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and World of Warcraft.

As a fashion concept, cosplay has also been seen to extend towards a style of dressing up not only as established, famous characters, but as characters that the enthusiast has developed themselves. This is often a crossover into the Japanese Lolita style of dress, where girls wear a distinctive, cute style. This allows girls who like the look but do not want to fully adopt the Lolita style as street dress to enjoy the less serious “Cosplay Lolita” style at cosplay events and venues.

Additional trends and sub-genres in cosplay include “crossplay”, which involves wearing the costume of a character of the opposite sex, and participants called “dollars”, who wear full body suits and masks to play characters without their own faces on show, rather like sports mascots.

Cosplay is usually something that takes place at parties, concerts, conventions and venues where likeminded people meet to show off their cosplay costumes, socialize, and photograph other enthusiasts. The most popular area for these kind of activities is the fashionable Harajuku area of Tokyo. In the district of Akihabara, a number of cosplay themed cafes have been opened during the last decade to cater to the cosplayers, and the staff all wear anime themed costumes themselves.

Twice a year, hundreds of thousands of cosplayers flock to Tokyo to visit the Comiket convention and market – the largest event in the world for anime cosplay enthusiasts.

The concept of dressing up and of taking part in role play based around popular characters also exists in the west, where cosplay style outfits are worn to attend science fiction and comic book conventions. The largest of these is held annually in San Diego.

The Way Animation Works

Filed under: anime — Tags: — admin @ 2:13 am

Animation is the rapid display of a sequence of images of 2-D or 3-D artwork or model positions in order to create an illusion of movement. It is an optical illusion of motion due to the phenomenon of persistence of vision, and can be created and demonstrated in a number of ways. The most common method of presenting animation is as a motion picture or video program, although several other forms of presenting animation also exist.

There’s three basic types of animation cosplay which have introduced a new era of fantastic technology in the subject of film business, media and Internet, the web site design and graphics. Basic animation is a straightforward and single keyframe animation. Animation is a presentation of assorted shows and actions, which adds liveliness to your site or film. Suggestion of Halloween Cosplay Costume

Filed under: cosplay costume — Tags: — admin @ 6:13 am

If you have time, you should certainly consider choosing a specific character and making a full cosplay for them. Choose someone from a game or anime you like, a movie, or even another cultural reference such as a box of Pocky. Since such costumes can be difficult to fashion, here are some tips:

Hair – This is usually the biggest problem cosplayers will face. Anime characters tend to have wildly-colored hair that defies gravity. The most cost-effective method is, of course, to use your own hair, styling it with gel and/or coloring it with dye. Washout or semi-permanent dyes of most exotic colors found in anime can be found through stylists, or, if it’s around Halloween, in a cosplay shop or department store. Wigs are generally the next best idea if you can obtain one in the desired color. Again, around Halloween these can be cheaper; during the rest of the season, buying one from an online store or a costume supply shop will still be better-priced than a professional wig. It is even possible to dye wigs if you have the correct type of dye, which can also be obtained online. If the style is impossible due to gravity, consider sewing a hairpiece out of fabric or fashioning one out of cardboard.

sexy-halloween-cosplay-costume

sexy-halloween-cosplay-costume

Weapons – Wood and paper-mache are your best friend here. Most video game characters will require a weapon of some sort, from scythes to machine guns. Investigate a local department store or toy store first for a base, and if you cannot find one, create one out of household objects. A broomstick and Styrofoam can be transformed into an elegant staff with just a little bit of paper-mache and paint.

Armor – A tricky addition to any cosplay, realistic armor is extremely difficult to create. If you happen to be skilled in working with fiberglass or know someone who is, you can make or commission your own. If you’re like the majority of people, you’ll need to make do with more paper-mache, cardboard, and metallic paint. Lacquered foams coated with silver paint can also look quite realistic with a little work.

Gloves – The most efficient way to deal with hand-wear is to buy work gloves, or cotton or satin party gloves, and dye them to suit your cosplay costumes. Bright pink elbow-length leather ballroom gloves can be difficult to come by, but satin is an easily-altered inexpensive substitute.
